About This Place

Ocean Star Restaurant in Monterey Park, CA, stands as a beloved destination for lovers of authentic Chinese and dim sum cuisine, especially seafood aficionados. Nestled at 145 N Atlantic Blvd on the bustling second floor, this culinary gem offers a vibrant dining experience that celebrates traditional flavors with a modern spirit.

The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the lively ambiance typical of classic dim sum eateries — the clinking of tea cups, the hum of chatter, and the enticing aromas of freshly steamed delicacies wafting through the air. The restaurant’s spacious seating, described by patrons as "football field size," ensures ample room for groups, making it an ideal spot for family gatherings or casual meetups with friends. Diners often revel in the communal aspect of dim sum here, with push carts expertly traversing the aisles, brimming with an array of tempting options.

Ocean Star’s menu is a treasure trove of dim sum favorites and delectable seafood dishes that invite indulgence. Standouts include the Steamed B.b.o Pork Bun and the delicately fluffy Steamed Egg Cream Bun, each bite a harmonious blend of savory richness and pillowy softness. For those seeking variety, the Shrimp Hat Gow offers tender shrimp wrapped in translucent rice dough, bursting with freshness and subtle sweetness. The Beef Rice Noodle and Shrimp Rice Noodle dishes elevate comforting textures with savory sauces layered with umami depth.

Vegetable lovers are not overlooked either, with options like the perfectly cooked Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce delivering a satisfying earthiness paired with luscious savory notes. Adventurous diners will appreciate the Squid with Spicy Salt and the tender Beef Tripe, which speak to Ocean Star’s dedication to traditional Cantonese seafood preparations. The hearty Steamed Chicken Rice and Steamed Sparerib Rice ensure that everyone can find a comforting plate to satisfy their craving.

Customers consistently praise Ocean Star for its approachable prices and excellent service, making the dim sum experience both enjoyable and accessible. As Sara Haskell aptly notes, visiting with a medium-sized group (around six people) unlocks the full dim sum adventure, allowing everyone to sample a variety of dishes without compromise. The atmosphere, while bustling and lively — a hallmark of authentic dim sum culture — is part of the charm for many, though some find it understandably loud. Still, the spirit of conviviality and tradition shines through, creating a genuinely warm dining environment.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a dim sum connoisseur, Ocean Star Restaurant’s blend of fresh seafood, expertly crafted dim sum, and spacious, friendly setting makes it a standout choice in the Los Angeles area. It’s no wonder longtime patrons like Sydney Wen and Nora Nora keep coming back — whether for casual meals or large celebrations, including weddings — drawn by the consistently fantastic roast pig and the timeless appeal of expertly made Cantonese fare.

Great dim sum place. A group of people is the best way to experience this, I recommend between 6-14, as more than that and you'll have your group split on multiple tables, but less than that and you won't get to try everything. So many choices! There are vegetarian options if you know how to ask about them, but most everything has pork or shrimp in it so I wouldn't recommend this to your veggie/vegan friends. If you see the almond tea go by with puff pastry on top, grab it before it's gone!!

The best Dim Sum in the Los Angeles area. Ample seating, excellent service, great prices, and, most importantly, super yummy food! Solid recommend, don't be late!

Fairly priced Dim Sum. Good flavors, good service. Would like to see improvements on the atmosphere as it'squite loud in there, but I guess thats to be expected?

They've been here a long time. On 2nd floor, traditional push carts is the only way to dim sum.

This is one of the few restaurants I know where the rating doesn’t reflect the actual experience. Personally, I’d give it a solid 5 out of 5. When I saw it sitting at 3.9, I honestly thought, “Wait… what??” I’ve been coming here for years with my family. If you're looking for a consistently good dim sum spot with generous portions (some places really skimp on the xiu mai), reasonable prices, and quick service, then this place delivers. So why the 5 stars from me, and why the surprise? Because this place is always packed. And it's not like it’s small and fills up quickly and the dining area is massive, yet it still stays busy. That tells me something. People clearly love it, and so do I. Now, the food might not be “life-changing,” but let’s be real—dim sum isn’t about being over-the-top fancy. It’s about comfort, consistency, and flavor—and this spot nails that. I’ve kept coming back for years, and to me, that says it all.
